Welcome-

Welcome to the Sheet Metal Workers’ Local Union No. 49 of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail & Transportation (SMART).

SMART serves to protect and raise the living standards of over 150,000 skilled men and women employed working with Sheet Metal throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

We work in the construction, manufacturing, service, railroad and shipyard industries and strive to establish and maintain desirable working conditions for members through their employers. Doing so provides them that measure of comfort, happiness, and security to which every member is entitled to in return for his or her highly trained and skilled labor.

Current Members of SMART Local 49 that sign up for new accounts on this page AND follow our Facebook and Instagram pages will be eligible for a free tee-shirt while supplies last.

Mission Statement:

SMART is dedicated to creating economic security and career opportunities for its members by safeguarding workplace, wage and benefits standards, investing in progressive apprenticeship training, and creating pathways to the middle class for the men and women and their families in the Sheet Metal Industry.

Who We are:

In late 1952, 129 men and their families joined together to help each other improve their quality of life. The Official SMWIA Charter for Local Union #49 in Albuquerque, New Mexico was signed on January 7, 1953. It is temporarily being displayed in the beautiful old copper charter frame from El Paso Local #188. Brother Jeep Gililland spent many hours restoring Local 49’s original charter frame and the result was well worth the effort. The charter, encased in the newly restored charter frame, symbolizes the beginning of many struggles and lots of hard work.
